It was the capital of Senegal from 1872 to 1957 and played an important cultural and economic role in the whole of West Africa. The location of the town on an island at the mouth of the Senegal River, its regular town plan, the system of quays, and the characteristic colonial architecture give Saint-Louis its distinctive appearance and identity. To the north-east of Kumasi, these are the last material remains of the great Asante civilization, which reached its high point in the 18th century. Since the dwellings are made of earth, wood and straw, they are vulnerable to the onslaught of time and weather. Later in the afternoon, continue to see the Okomfo Anokye Sword, an important symbol of Ashanti unity that marks the spot where the Golden Stool descended from the sky and has been in place for 300 years. Legend says the Ashanti Kingdom would collapse should the sword ever be removed. Visit Manhiya Palace, which remains in use by the Asantehene today and houses a small historical museum.

The castle was used during the Anglo Dutch War of 1664-1666 by Admiral de Ruyter, commander of the Dutch fleet. The harbor next to Elmina Castle has numerous pirogues preparing to go to sea and offers one of West Africa’s greatest photo opportunities. Elmina Castle is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. In this forest one could find the endangered, playful and rather sacred True Mona Monkeys. Believing the monkeys to be messengers to the gods and their protectors, the chiefs and people of Tafi have been protecting them for the past 200 years. Visit also Wli falls, the highest water falls in Ghana. It is perennial as water cascades throughout the year. It is located at the edge of the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary, which has hundreds of fruit bats and a few monkeys and antelopes. The water falls from a height of about 1,600 feet. Depart Ghana through to Kara in northern Togo.

Day 9 (SUN) Kara – Koutamamakou - Kara
UNESCO World Heritage Site of Koutammakou, the Land of the Batammariba (2004)
The Koutammakou landscape in north-eastern Togo, which extends into neighbouring Benin, is home to the Batammariba whose remarkable mud tower-houses (Takienta) have come to be seen as a symbol of Togo. In this landscape, nature is strongly associated with the rituals and beliefs of society. The 50,000-ha cultural landscape is remarkable due to the architecture of its tower-houses which are a reflection of social structure; its farmland and forest; and the associations between people and landscape. Many of the buildings are two storeys high and those with granaries feature an almost spherical form above a cylindrical base. Some of the buildings have flat roofs, others have conical thatched roofs. They are grouped in villages, which also include ceremonial spaces, springs, rocks and sites reserved for initiation ceremonies. (B, D)

UNESCO World Heritage Site (1985) From 1625 to 1900, 12 kings succeeded one another at the head of the powerful Kingdom of Abomey. With the exception of King Akaba, who had his own separate enclosure, they all had their palaces built within the same cob-wall area, in keeping with previous palaces as regards the use of space and materials. The royal palaces of Abomey are a unique reminder of this vanished kingdom. (B, D)

Day 15 (SAT) Cotonou – Ouidah - Cotonou
Spend the day in Ouidah, the birthplace of Voodoo. Visit the Museum of History where the exhibits focus on the slave trade and Benin’s links with Brazil and the Caribbean. Visit Kindji market square.
