Turkmenistan – saddled in the most interesting part of the world, this Central Asia country is relatively new and actually very old. Bordered by the Caspian Sea in the west, it has good neighbourly relations with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in the north; Afghanistan in the southeast and Iran in the south.

A country of contrasts, the capital city of Ashgabat standing out as a whole different entity to the rest of the country. The city of Ashgabat (Persian word meaning “city of love”) has more white marble structures then probably the whole of Canada. Huge, majestic, white, with columns going so high that would make you lift your head awkwardly to see the top. Ashgabat is a very clean city and is best known for its Sunday Bazaar where different items are sold in a very colourful oriental set up. The bazaar is the major cultural event of the week and the most popular part of the bazaar is the live stock area where one can see the “flying” camels – where cranes are used to lift camels from trucks. Besides housing three wonderful museums (including the carper museum where the world’s largest carpet is on display), the world heritage site of Nissa is also very closely located to Ashgabat.

Many ancient civilizations flourished in this what may seem barren land and they have all left their marks. Two of the three UNESO World heritage sites in Turkmenistan include Merv (Mary) and Kunya Urgench. Merv –a major Silk road center and was the 12th Centuries largest city in the world. Merv is the oldest and best-preserved of the oasis-cities along the Silk Route in Central Asia. The remains in this vast oasis span 4,000 years of human history. A number of monuments are still visible, particularly from the last two millennia.

The other interesting and UNESCO World Heritage Site is Kunya Urgench which is located in north-western Turkmenistan, on the left bank of the Amu Daria River. Urgench was the capital of the Khorezm region, part of the Achaemenid Empire. The old town contains a series of monuments mainly from the 11th to 16th centuries, including a mosque, the gates of a caravanserai, fortresses, mausoleums and a 60-m high minaret. The monuments testify to outstanding achievements in architecture and craftsmanship whose influence reached Iran and Afghanistan, and later the architecture of the Mogul Empire of 16th-century India.

Kunya Urgench is closely located to another World Heritage site in neighbouring Uzbekistan called Khiva. More on that later. Turkmenistan is a country of contrasts and is slowly getting into the 21st century. It is best combined with Uzbekistan, Iran and Turkey. Turkish Airlines as well as Lufthansa, Aeroflot and Turkmen Airlines sly to the city of love. Click here for our tours to Turkmenistan.

Review: "Afghanistan" trip
- July 13, 2010

Thank you all so very much for putting together my trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Mahmood, Shiraz and Chi did a fantastic job in making this all work ... the arrangements in both countries were perfect, hotels, drivers, guides ... all were above my expectations. It was a great trip ... in fact, I might like to go back again next year. We'll think seriously about that. In the meantime, thank you all again for your help and planning.

Sincerely,
Judith Montgomery Wilcox
