Cultural tour & Safari of Uganda & Rwanda
Enlarge Map

The East African countries of Uganda and Rwanda are known for their natural heritage. Both not only offer wildlife sightings very different from their neighbours, but also a unique cultural experience that is the envy of other African countries. Uganda has 10 national game parks, including Lake Mburo and Bwindi Impenetrable National Parks, which hosts the largest population of gorillas in the world, a highlight of African safari trips. Rwanda, also famous for gorillas, is home to the quirky golden monkeys. This artistically designed safari provides a rare opportunity to see some of the world’s most unique endangered primates.

Day 01: Arrive Entebbe/Kampala (Drive) (UGANDA)

Our exciting safari begins. We are cordially welcomed at Entebbe – an international airport city and the gateway for tours to Uganda. The capital of Uganda is Kampala, Entebbe’s sister city located a 90 minute drive away.
Overnight: Best Western Hotel, Entebbe (1 night)

Day 02: Entebbe/Lake Mburo National Park (Drive)

We start off by heading south to Lake Mburo National Park. Enjoy the enchanting green scenery enroute. We stop at villages, meet local folks and pause for a light lunch. The next stop is at the Equator. Here lies a unique opportunity to photograph yourself with one leg on the northern and the other on the southern hemisphere. As we arrive at Lake Mburo National Park, we go on an exciting safari. Mburo is the best place in the country to see Eland antelope, zebra, topi, impala and acacia. The five lakes within the park attract hippo and crocodile, and are also home to 332 species of water bird.

Our destination today is Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park*. The ancient rainforest of Bwindi spans 331 square kilometers. The park boasts over 120 mammal species, including the famed mountain gorillas, a range of primates and 23 Albertine Rift endemic bird species, such as the African Green Broadbill and the Bar Tailed Trogon. We travel through the lovely countryside and beautiful terraced hills of Uganda before arriving at Bwindi*. With the largest population of gorillas in the world, Bwindi is best known for the 9 groups of gorilla families that live within its forests.
Overnight: Lake Mulehe Gorilla Lodge, Bwindi (2 nights) (B, L, D)

Day 04: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

The awaited day! Optional Gorilla tracking – the Ugandan experience. A captivating, unforgettable activity. We start at 0730AM in small groups of no more than 8 people, accompanied by a forest expert. Hiking through the thick, verdant rainforest, we eventually come across the gorillas in their natural habitat. It is an amazing site and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Actual trek times can vary as gorillas wander from one part of the park to another, but our forest expert will have a way to narrow down the search. Only 104 gorilla viewing permits are issued for any given day.
Afternoon is free to enjoy the many optional activities that are unique to Bwindi, like a village walk or a waterfall hike. (B, L, D)

Day 05: Bwindi/Ruhengeri (Drive) (RWANDA)

We bid farewell to the country that Winston Churchill called The Pearl Of Africa. Crossing overland to Rwanda we will be at Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) late morning. Afternoon is free to relax or take an optional tour. Set aside time to plan your next day’s activity, with the choice to either do another gorilla tracking (subject to permits) or encounter the golden monkeys.
Overnight: Five Volcanoes Lodge, Ruhengeri (2 nights) (B, L, D)

Day 06: Ruhengeri

Optional Gorilla tracking – the Rwandan experience. Morning is the time for another exciting round of gorilla tracking. Seven gorilla families reside at the Volcanoes National Park. It is an early start at 0700AM with a local African forest expert who will guide you through the morning. Group size here is also limited to 8 with no more than 80 permits being issued each day. There is an element of hiking on relatively easy terrain. The adventure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how soon you see the gorillas.
Afternoon is free for optional activities, such as seeing the golden monkeys, visiting the grave of Dian Fossey, the American primatologist and conservationist known for undertaking an extensive study of mountain gorilla groups over a period of 18 years, being entertained at the Ibyiwatu Cultural group with local dances and learning more about the Rwandan culture, music, dance and drama, or visiting the twin lakes before returning to the lodge in the evening. (B, L, D)
