BEST OF ARGENTINA

Cultural tour of Argentina

Our tour starts in Argentina's vibrant, wonderfully idiosyncratic capital, Buenos Aires. This city is famous for its tango, football and European-style architecture, picturesque cobbled neighbourhoods, sophisticated shopping and some of the best and most varied cuisine in the whole continent. We then head to the end-of-the-world archipelago of Tierra del Fuego to explore the national park and the world’s southernmost city, Ushuaia. Our tour concludes in windswept Patagonia, visiting Calafate and Los Glaciares National Park, famous for the immense Perito Moreno Glacier.

Day 01: Arrive Buenos Aires

This afternoon, we arrive at Buenos Aires Airport, where we will be met and transferred to the hotel.

2019: In the evening, enjoy an excursion to the tango house La Ventana, a MUST in Buenos Aires! La Ventana is one of the most authentic tango houses in the city. It is located in the San Telmo neighborhood, the heart of the tango scene in Buenos Aires. The Tango tradition started at the end of the last century, developing from a mixture of various rhythms which were originally danced in the poorer quarters. In the beginning, tango was only danced by men, accompanied by flutes, violins and guitars. The flutes were later replaced by the "bandoneón" (a type of accordion), which gave the tango its distinctive flavor. During the excursion, we can opt between a tango lesson with specialized teachers or a wine tasting session of different Argentinean wines. Afterwards, enjoy dinner (which includes three courses and non-alcoholic beverages as well as half bottle of wine or two glasses of beer per person) and a tango show.  After the tango show return back to the hotel. Arrival at the hotel around midnight.

**Please Note: This excursion is shared with international travelers. The transfers from the hotel to the tango house and back take place with other international travelers from different hotels and a Spanish-speaking driver. The tango lesson/wine tasting session is bilingual (Spanish/English)

Day 02: Buenos Aires

After breakfast, enjoy a city tour of Buenos Aires (3 hrs). First, drive to the Plaza de Mayo, where we see the Casa Rosada, the pink house, seat of the government, the Cabildo (town hall) and the Metropolitan Cathedral, home of the Archbishop of Buenos Aires. Then explore the district San Telmo. Until 1888, this part of the city was a river port. Today San Telmo is one of the most modern and desired places to live in Buenos Aires. Our next stop is the worker district La Boca, famous for its colourful tin-houses and its history as the living district of Italian seamen and dock workers in the 19th century. The Barrio Norte, called Recoleta, is the quarter of the rich of Buenos Aires. On the cemetery of Recoleta, we will find the grave of Eva Duarte, who became famous as Evita Perón. Continue along the widest avenue in the world, the Avenida 9 de Julio, to the Plaza Lavalle with the Federal Court of Justice and the Teatro Colón. Then journey on to Palermo with its parks and gardens before returning to the hotel. Afternoon is free to sample more of Buenos Aires’ highlights.

2019: Get in touch with the birth city of the Tango!  During our city tour in Buenos Aires, we will drive along 9 de Julio Avenue, the widest avenue in the world, passing close to the Colon Theatre, one of the world's best known opera houses and the cultural pride of the "bonaerenses". Visit the famous Avenida de Mayo that runs into the Plaza De Mayo, surrounded by the Casa Rosada (Government House), the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Cabildo (first City Hall, built during Spanish rule). At the other end of Avenida de Mayo, the cupola of the Congress building can be seen. See the stunning interior of the Metropolitan Cathedral, an imposing neo-classical building that is Argentina´s main Catholic building. The mausoleum of General San Martin, Argentina’s national hero, is located inside the cathedral. Pope Francisco used to celebrate religious services in this cathedral when he was cardinal of Buenos Aires city. Next stop is the famous Café Tortoni, the oldest literati café of the city. Enjoy a cup of coffee and a snack.  Then journey to La Boca, a colorful area with the famous street Caminito.  Continue to the north area and visit the Recoleta, one of the city’s most glamorous spots. Here we will see elegant boutiques and excellent restaurants, surrounded by centennial trees.  The heart of the neighborhood is the Recoleta cemetery, where the most relevant personalities of Argentina’s history rest. The cemetery is considered to be one of the most impressive monuments of Argentina, and our 30-minute stop includes a visit to Eva Duarte`s grave, known as Eva. (B)

Day 03: Buenos Aires/Ushuaia (Flight)

Transfer to the domestic airport for our flight to Ushuaia (not included). Upon arrival, we are met and transferred to the hotel.

2019: On our way to the hotel, enjoy a short orientation city tour with a photo stop at one of the panoramic viewpoints of Ushuaia.

Day 04: Ushuaia

In the morning, experience a half-day tour of the impressive Tierra del Fuego National Park, the southernmost point of the Americas. The long stormy winters and the width of the sky form a very simple and modest way of living here. Drive through the park, taking in the stunning landscape crisscrossed by rivers, and enjoy a short walk.

2019: In the afternoon, journey from Ushuaia city to Estancia Harberton. The route is rustic, with unpaved roads in some sections of the trip.  Estancia Harberton is located on the shores of Beagle Channel. Upon arrival, take a look around the farm and learn about its origins. The estancia was founded in 1886 by the Anglican missionary Thomas Bridges and it is the oldest building on the island.  Later on, take a short sailing trip (15-minutes one way) aboard semi-rigid boats to cross to Martillo Island. At this point, we will have the chance to watch a colony of Magellan and Gentoo penguins and walk close by them.  The first penguins arrive at Isla Martillo by late October (just a few couples can be seen). The best penguin viewing is mid-November until mid-April.  Penguins share their habitat with different birds, so we will also see skuas (main penguin predator), albatrosses, petrels, cormorants and other birds from the area during the penguin tour.  Return back to Estancia Haberton and aboard the semi-rigid boat (15-minute trip). We have some time at leisure to visit the birds and sea mammals museum before returning back to Ushuaia city by land (approx. 2 hours).

**Please note: This tour is shared with other international travellers and is subject to availability at the time of booking.

Bilingual guide: English / Spanish

Sea mammals museum entrance fee not included.

Both islands De los Pájaros and De los Lobos belong to the Bridges archipelago.  Upon arrival at Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, see the colonies of cormorants. Continuing the trip to the east, enjoy a beautiful landscape of the channel and the surrounding mountains. From here, we will see over the Argentinean coast Puerto Almanza and over the Chilean coast the naval base of Puerto Williams. Upon arrival at Martillo Island, we will have the chance to see a colony of Magellan penguins and some penguins from Papua. Return back to Ushuaia, navigating close to the north coast of the channel. Every 4 to 5 years, it covers the gap between the mainland and itself and grows into the Lago Argentino.
