The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a vast, predominantly desert nation in Northwest Africa that serves as a cultural bridge between the Arab-Berber Maghreb and sub-Saharan West Africa. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Senegal, Mali, Algeria, and the disputed Western Sahara territory, approximately 90% of the country is covered by the Sahara Desert. With a population of around 4.5 million, the country is known for its deeply rooted nomadic traditions, historic caravan cities, and a unique blend of Berber, Arab, and black African cultures.
