Day 01: Arrive Zanzibar
The islands of Unguja and Pemba, which together form Zanzibar, are more than just a beach stop for African safari vacations—they also offers a unique cultural experience! Upon arrival, we are welcomed with the traditional warmth the island is famous for and transferred to our artistically designed and ideally located hotel, where we stay for three nights. Our upscale beachfront accommodation faces the Indian Ocean, and is less than a 5-minute walk from Forodhani Gardens. Evening, enjoy free time to stroll on the beach or better still, walk through the enchanting narrow streets of Stone Town, reminiscent of Arabian Nights.
Overnight: Zanzibar Serena (Deluxe)/Tembo House (First Class)/Forodhani Park Hotel, Stone Town, Zanzibar (3 nights)
Day 02: Zanzibar
An exciting full-day tour of Zanzibar. Our morning is dedicated to historic Stone Town*, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, we see how the once thriving slave market functioned and explore the remains of the slave lodgings. Walk through the narrow 1001 Nights-style streets, offering an African version of the storyteller’s bazaar. This is followed by a visit to the Anglican Church, built in 1873, and the landmark Zanzibar Museum, called Beit-al-Ajaib or “House of Wonders”. We then explore the last Sultan’s Palace and Livingstone House & Market (opened 1904). Zanzibar is known for its unique architecture, due to contributions of the many different ethnic groups that have lived here over history. We will have the chance to particularly admire some of the elaborately carved wooden doors (known as “Omani doors”) for which the city is famous. Next, enjoy tasting the local delicatessen at the souq, including tropical fruits, spices (cloves) and sweets (halwa). Zanzibar is particularly known for its durian fruit, coconuts, BBQ fish and fried delicacies like kebabs and bhajias.
Afternoon, we explore Prison Island, known locally as Changuu. Experience a traditional boat ride, observing local fishermen in search of their daily catch. At Changuu, we see the island’s most famous inhabitant – a 190-year-old tortoise wandering the island and always ready to pose for a photo session! After taking in the local museum and some friendly reptiles, we have time to enjoy a swim or snorkel, or just laze on the beach before we return to the mainland. (B)
Day 03: Zanzibar
Day free to enjoy Zanzibar, or “Unguja”, as it is called in the native Kiswahili language. Wander the narrow streets to immerse yourself in local culture or spend some time relaxing on the beach. We also offer optional tours such as visiting a local spice farm, swimming with dolphins, sailing in traditional boats (“ngalawas”), or enjoying the spectacular sunrises and sunsets of the Indian Ocean.
In the evening, we recommend a visit to Forodhani Gardens, a great place to meet local folks wanting to practise their English. The gardens are especially busy after sunset, when tourists and locals alike gather to have a dinner of Swahili and Zanzibari delicacies such as grilled seafood, samosas, cassava and sweet potatoes. The garden was rehabilitated by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in 2009 at a cost of more than $3 million! (B)
Day 04: Zanzibar/Departure
After an unforgettable journey through time, we are transferred to the airport for our departure flight back home. Alternatively, extend your island journey with other exciting activities, including optional activities on Zanzibar ranging from cycling to scuba diving, relaxation on the stunning white beaches of Zanzibar’s Jambiani, or a visit to the neighbouring island of Pemba. Please contact us for details. (B)
