Set in the eastern corner of India, thousands of kilometers away from hubs like Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi, Nagaland offers an immersive experience far from the typical tourist path. Once a year, Nagaland’s 16 plus indigenous tribes come together to share their traditions in a spectacle unlike any other—the Hornbill Festival, or "Festival of Festivals".

Journey deep into one of India’s most underexplored regions on a special edition tour that brings you to the heart of Nagaland and beyond. Explore remote villages like the Konyak head-hunters, journey through India's famed tea regions, from Assam's iconic gardens to colonial Darjeeling, and take in aerial views of Everest en route to the serene Buddhist monasteries of Sikkim, Amit MalhotraIndia's Himalayan wonderland just waiting to be discovered. Day 01 – December 01, 2025: Arrive Kolkata

Namaste! We are warmly received and transferred to our hotel. Check-in time begins at 1400 hrs. Balance of the day is free in Kolkata (Calcutta) capital of the eastern state of West Bengal. West Bengal has a population of over 91 million and Kolkata’s share being just over 4.5 million. Balance of the day is free to relax. We have a 2-nights stay in Kolkata.

Day 02 – December 02, 2025: Kolkata

Howrah Bridge, Kolkata, West Bengal, India

Our day starts with an early morning visit to the Howrah Bridge – the iconic symbol of Kolkata. Under the bridge is the famous Malik Ghat flower market where the cities floral retailers buy their fresh flowers and its fragrance. Our exploration of this historical city begins Belur Math, the 1897 built headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission. It is notable for its architecture that features Hindu, Christian and Islamic motifs as a symbol of the unity of all religions. Included also is a visit to Dakshineswar Kali Temple, a Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess, Kali. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas - the sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites dedicated to the goddess, Shakti.

Afternoon, is dedicated to British Raj in Calcutta where we visit St. John's Church, St. Paul's Cathedral and the Victoria Memorial which was conceived by Lord Curzon to commemorate the British Empire at its peak. The British entered Eastern India as a trading mission which ended up in taking over the reign from the Nawab (king) of Bengal at the famous 1757 Battle of Plassey. That rule ended on Aug 15, 1947. Enjoy a Welcome Dinner comprising of typical Bengali cuisine at the classic Oh! Calcutta Restaurant. (B, D)

Day 03 – December 03, 2025: Kolkata/Dimapur (Flight 08:45 10:05 hrs.) /Kohima (Drive 70 Kms/2 Hours)

With a boxed breakfast from the kitchen of our hotel, we take our flight to Dimapur. Upon arrival, we drive to Kohima, capital city of Nagaland. Nagaland is located in the far east of India at the border with Myanmar on the one side and other Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Manipur. Evening, enjoy a stroll of this small 100,000 populated town known for its indigenous culture and home to the Angami Naga and other tribes. It is a city of colourful blossoms, lively fests and stunning peaks. The Hornbill festival is the largest and most important of festivals in north east India. Centred at the Naga Heritage Village of Kisama near Kohima, the festival is a 10days event from December 01 to 10 with the first 3 days being the highlighets. It attracts tribes from across Nagaland all dressed up in traditional and colourful beautiful finery.  To partake the festival’s many activities, we will have a 3-nights stay here.

Day 04 – December 04, 2025: Kohima & Hornbill (FESTIVAL DAY 01)

Embark on a captivating journey to the Hornbill Festival. The festival serves as a window to Nagaland. We will experience the life style and traditions along with songs, traditional dances, food, craft making as well as some sporting events like wrestling, archery, the Naga chilli-eating championship, musical concerts.  We will explore the area where each of the traditional huts (called Morungs) are built in the shape of the map of Nagaland. These morungs give us a very insight into the way of life in the tribal homes.  Witness the dynamic performances of the 16 Naga tribes, showcasing traditional dances, music, and dramatizations of war and life. Immerse yourself in the rich heritage through the exquisite handcrafts, handlooms, and the colorful attire of the tribes. The open-air amphitheater offers a unique opportunity, perfect for photography and a wonderful people to people encounter. This full-day event provides an unforgettable opportunity to explore the diverse cultural traditions of the Nagas, offering a truly enriching experience. Various events take place every festive day giving us a cultural immersion before returning to Kohima. Enjoy time to edit the many images you will have taken. Day 05 – December 05, 2025: Kohima & Hornbill (FESTIVAL DAY 02)

The Festival of festivals, is a full day showcasing the vibrant performances of traditional dances of Nagaland. Other states close to Nagaland also participate. All put together, the Northeastern states are collectively known as the 'Seven Sisters.' The Kisama Village Complex offers a unique cultural experience with sixteen tribal houses, each representing the indigenous architectural design and traditions of the respective Naga tribes. These houses which are large dormitories, reflecting the colorful life and history of the 7 Sisters. These immersive activities will provide us with a deeper understanding of the region's diverse tribal heritage and rich cultural traditions. (B, L, D)

Day 06 – December 06, 2025: Kohima/Mokokchung (Drive 140 Kms/5 Hours)

Dzükou Valley Trek, Kohima, Nagaland, India

Leaving the festive to the history we take on a whole different facet of the history of the region. We visit the WWII Cemetery in Kohima, a historical landmark commemorating the soldiers who lost their lives here. Next, enjoy the “chaos” at the local market of Kohima, where you can shop for traditional Naga handicrafts, textiles, local produce and everything Naga. Continuing our journey to Mokokchung, the cultural hub of the Ao Nagas we visit the Touphema Village, a replica of a traditional Angami Naga village. Upon arrival at Mokokchung, we visit Ungma Village, the 2nd largest village in Nagaland, offering insights into Ao Naga folklore and traditions. Conclude the tour by experiencing the vibrant culture and scenic beauty of Mokokchung. It will be a day when a lot of interesting cultural interactions as we meet the local folks from the different tribes.

Day 07 – December 07, 2025: Mokokchung/Wakchin/Mon (Drive 160 Kms/6 Hours)

Morning drive to Mon, the land of the Konyak Tribes. En route, we visit the Wakching Village and later the Shiyong Village. Both are well known to have retained their traditional lifestyles. Upon arrival at Mon we are transferred to our hotel. At Mon, we get a picture of a larger town and visit some of the local highlights - mostly from the legacy of the Konyak tribe. The day offers a fascinating insight into the history, culture and lifestyle of the Konyaks one of Nagaland's most iconic tribes. We have a 2-nights stay at Mon.

Day 08 – December 08, 2025: Mon

Naga Tribes

Today, embark on a full-day excursion to explore the Konyak Head Hunter Tribal Villages. We are accompanied by a local guide from the region to help us navigate the various sites and villages. Visit Hongphoi Village home to the Konyak Naga tribe and famous for its historical head-hunting traditions and intricate tattoos symbolizing bravery and warrior. Continue to the Longwa Village located close to the India-Myanmar border. Local villagers hold dual citizenship as such they cross from one country to another retaining their family connections. This unique village offers a glimpse into the life and the blending of Indian and Burmese cultures. Experience the rich heritage, traditions and remarkable history, making for an unforgettable cultural journey. Ofcourse, we will also enjoy our dinner which is cooked in a style and taste of neither Indian nor Burmese exclusively but combined with the popular ingredients of both sides. (B, L, D)

Day 09 – December 09, 2025: Mon/Dibrugarh (Drive 140 Kms/4 Hours)

An exciting and a whole different day ahead as we take a scenic drive to see the Tea Gardens of Assam. The tea industry in Assam is about 172 years old. It occupies an important place and plays a very useful part in the national economy. In 1823, Robert Bruce discovered tea plants growing wild in the upper Brahmaputra Valley.  Ten years later, “tea garden” was introduced in the erstwhile Lakhimpur district of Assam. Today, it is the Tea Capital of India. Continue to Dibrugarh, the "Tea City of India," with a visit to include the iconic Tea Gardens of Assam. Upon arrival, we check in at our hotel. Late afternoon, we explore the old market of Dibrugarh and visit the Jagannath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Evening is free to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the city. Sip Assam tea at the very source.

Day 10 – December 10, 2025: Dibrugarh/Bagdogra (Flight 12:15 13:35 hrs.) Bagdogra/Gangtok (Drive 125 Kms/4 Hours)

After breakfast, a short flight gets us to the beautiful city of Bagdogra. Bur before that, on a clear sunlit morning, seating on the right side of the aircraft and minutes after takeoff, you will be in for a treat viewing the Himalayas in Nepal. The view of the world’s highest Mt Everest (8611m) lasts for 10 minutes followed by other peaks like the world’s 3rd highest, Mt. Kanchenjungha (8586m), and the Lhotse (8485m) the 4th highest. (The 2nd highest mountain, the K-2, is in the Karakorum range and is located in Pakistan some 1315 Kms away). Upon arrival, we drive to Gangtok and check in at our hotel. Enjoy a relaxed evening, exploring the serene surroundings of the city and its lush tea estates, with verdant plantations stretching as far as the eye can see. Each tea estate in Bagdogra has a story etched into its terraced slopes. We enjoy a 2-nights stay at Gangtok.

Day 11 – December 11, 2025: Gangtok

We begin our day visiting the Enchey Monastery, an important seat of the Nyingrna order. This lineage that stems from this initial spreading of Buddhism to Tibet, came to be known as Nyingma, or Ancient School. The Nyingma tradition holds unique teachings that are not found in other lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. Among its distinct teachings are the Tantra of the Secret Essence and the Great Perfection.

The Dodrul Chorten here is one of the largest stupas in Sikkim followed by a visit to the Sikkim Research Institute of Tibetology, an institute established to promote research of the language and traditions of Tibet as well as the Mahayana sect of Buddhism. The museum houses a rare collection of antique statues, coins and thangkas. There are about 30,000 volumes of translations of the original teachings of the Buddha and treatises by distinguished Buddhist scholars from different parts of the world.

Afternoon, we visit the famous Rumtek Monastery, also known as Dharma Chakra Centre. This monastery is one of the most important seats of the Kagyu lineage outside of Tibet. What an interesting insight to Buddhism today. Evening is free to enjoy the town of Gangtok on our own. (B, D)

Day 12 – December 12, 2025: Gangtok/Pelling (Drive 110 Kms/4 Hours)

A relaxed morning drive to Ravangla (also known as Rabong) - a small town located at an elevation of 8000 feet. It offers stunning views of the Greater Himalayan Ranges. We visit the Statue of Guru Padmasambhava Guru (c.701–800) who was an Indian Buddhist mystic and Vajra master and was responsible to introduce Tantric Buddhism to Tibet. He is also known as Guru Rinpoche, which means "Precious Guru". After exploring local villages, we drive to the enchanting town of Pelling situated at 7000 ft. - an typical hill station for a 2-nights stay.

Day 13 – December 13, 2025: Pelling

Pelling, Sikkim, India

Morning we visit the Pemayangtse Monastery, a deeply respected Buddhist monastery which was built in 1647. It is one of the state's oldest monasteries and stands tall on a hilltop overlooking the ancient ruins of Rabdentse, the former capital of the Sikkim Kingdom. Enjoy the Pelling Skywalk, featuring the tallest Chenrezig statue in the world at 137ft/42m. Continue to Singshore Bridge, standing 100m high and 240m long, the highest in Sikkim and the second-highest in Asia, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding greenery. We culminate our stay in Sikkim and visit Darap Village, known for its traditional Sikkimese culture and stunning landscapes. (B, D)

Day 14 – December 14, 2025: Pelling/Darjeeling (Drive 75 Kms/3 Hours)

The climax of our journey is probably yet to come as we drive to Darjeeling, world renowned for its flavour of tea. Teas was first introduced in Darjeeling in 1841 by Archibald Campbell, a surgeon working for the East India Company. At that time, Darjeeling was then a part of the Kingdom of Sikkim. 15 years later, in 1856, the British, realising the value of the crop, annexed Darjeeling from the king of Sikkim. Darjeeling tea is known for its unique flavor and is considered as one of the finest teas in the world. The high and unique quality of Darjeeling tea is due to its cool, damp climate, high elevation, and constant mist. We visit the well-known Buddhist pilgrimage site of Namchi Monastery and the Hindu Shiva Temple- Siddheshwar Dham (Char Dham). Upon arrival, we check into our hotel. Remainder of the day is free to rest and explore the town. We enjoy an unforgettable 2-nights stay in Darjeeling

Day 15 – December 15, 2025: Darjeeling

A day never to be forgotten! Before sunrise, we drive to Tiger Hill and view the sunrise from behind the lofty mountain peaks of the Himalayas. On a clear day we can view Mounts Everest and Kangchenjunga. After breakfast at our hotel, we take an exciting and unique ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Toy Train*. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it completed construction in 1879. The 2-hours train ride to Ghoom will offer unforgettable views of tea gardens, forests, villages, valleys, and snow-capped peaks especially at the Batasia Loop. The train track includes six zig-zags and five loops and embodies the legacy of the British raj of India. The train's stops at a few stations allowing passengers to interact with the locals. At Ghoom, we will see a small monastery with a 15ft Buddha statue built in 1875. It houses one of the largest statues of the Maitreya Buddha. Next, we visit the Himalayan Zoo, home to the Red Pandas, Black Bears, Yaks and Tigers in their natural habitat. End our day with a visit of the Natural History Museum, housing a fine collection of preserved butterflies, birds, reptiles and insects of the Himalayas. (B, D)

Day 16 – December 16, 2025: Darjeeling/Bagdogra (Drive 70 Kms) & Bagdogra/Delhi or Kolkata (Flight)

After a wonderful experience of India’s eastern region, one very different than the other regions of India which you may or may not have seen, we are transferred to Bagdogra airport for our flight. Bagdogra is conveniently connected with Delhi and Kolkata. A wonderful opportunity to extend your tour to Bhutan or other neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal and Thailand. (B)
