Uncover the jewels of the Balkans with our 9-day journey through Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Serbia. Our explorations start in Dubrovnik, the “Pearl of the Adriatic”, before moving to Mostar, home of one of the Balkans’ most legendary sites, the 16th century Mostar bridge. We then continue on to Sarajevo, once known as the “Jerusalem of Europe”, before ending our adventure in Belgrade, offering a history going back more than 7,000 years as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

Day 01: Arrive Dubrovnik (CROATIA)

Welcome to Dubrovnik! Known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic”, Dubrovnik offers a beautiful combination of picturesque orange rooftops, shimmering blue waters and noteworthy monuments. We are met and transferred to our hotel. The day is free to relax, or begin our explorations. Later, we gather for a welcome dinner, which includes a glass of wine, beer or soft drink.

Day 02: Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik - Medieval walled city on the Dalmatian Coast

Today, we are introduced to world-famous Old Dubrovnik* with a walking tour of the area’s highlights. We’ll see the Rector’s Palace, the Bell Tower Clock, Orlando’s Column, Sponza Palace, the Dominican Monastery, and the Franciscan Monastery with its Pharmacy. The pharmacy here dates back to 1317, making it the oldest pharmacy in the world still in operation! Afterwards, we visit a local artisan to learn about the traditional craftsmanship that still thrives. Remainder of the day is at leisure. (B)

Day 03: Dubrovnik

Day at leisure to sample Dubrovnik’s delights. Many visitors enjoy people-watching while sipping coffee in one of the numerous cozy cafes on the Stradun, the main street of Dubrovnik. The city has a rich cultural life that includes theatre, cinema and art, as well as the Dubrovnik Film Festival and Dubrovnik Summer Festival, held every year in July and August. Later, enjoy dinner. Day 04: Dubrovnik/Mostar (Drive) (BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA)

Mostar - Bosnian town known for its Old Bridge and Turkish houses.

We continue our journey, making our way to Mostar. With its history as an Ottoman-era town and its more recent Austro-Hungarian influences, Mostar is unique—it may even be one of the most interesting places to visit in the entirety of Europe!  Situated on the Neretva River, Mostar is named after the medieval bridge keepers (mostari) who used to guard the Stari Most, the city’s famous Old Bridge*. Built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, the Old Bridge is one of the Balkans’ most recognizable landmarks, and is considered an exemplary piece of Islamic architecture. After our morning tour exploring Mostar, we have time to enjoy remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 05: Mostar/Sarajevo (Drive)

A relaxed time in Mostar before we take a scenic drive along the gorge of the Neretva River through the mountains on our way to Sarajevo, yet another jewel of Bosnia. Upon arrival, we are transferred to our hotel. The afternoon is free to stroll around this unique city.

Day 06: Sarajevo

Orthodox Cathedral & Liberation Monument on Trg Oslobodenja (Liberation Square), Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Over its long history, Sarajevo has been influenced by a number of cultures and civilizations. We visit the Turkish bazaar “Bas Carsija”, Husref Bay’s Mosque, the Olympic Stadium and Gavrilo Princip Museum. Balance of the day is free to discover Sarajevo. Explore the narrow lane pathways where, at each turn, there is something unique to see. (B)

Day 07: Sarajevo/Belgrade (Drive) (SERBIA)

We continue our journey, making our way to Belgrade, the capital of Tito’s Yugoslavia. En route, we stop to see Visegrad with its bridge on the Drina River. It was built in oriental style in the 16th century and is a masterpiece of civil engineering. We then stop at Drvengrad (translated as “Timber Town”), where famous director Emir Kusturica built the beautiful Ethno Village. Our final stop is in Uzice before we end our day in Belgrade.

Day 08: Belgrade

Belgrade - Serbia's capital was battled over in 115 wars since Antiquity

With a history dating back more than 7,000 years, Belgrade is a fascinating city to visit. Our morning tour includes imposing Kalemegdan Fortress, dramatically situated at the joining of the Sava and Danube Rivers, Republic Square and Knez Mihajlova Street. We also see Saint Sava Temple, the largest Orthodox Church in the city, and Tito’s Memorial. Afternoon is free to see more of this lovely city. Tonight, we join our fellow travelers and tour director for a dinner with live music. (B, D)

Day 09: Depart Belgrade

Following breakfast, we are transferred to the Belgrade airport in time for our departure flight. Check out is by 1100 hrs. Or better still, continue your adventure with an extension into Bulgaria or another Balkan country, such as North Macedonia. Please ask for details. (B)
